The word can sound like a catalogue of rules, or a way to make people feel small. In Christianity it is more fundamental than that: a turning away from the good, and from the God who gives life.
More than wrong actions
Sin shows up in obvious harm, like cruelty, lies and violence. It also shows up in quieter ways: pride, indifference, fear, and the misuse of good things such as work, money or love. It damages our relationships with God, with other people and even with ourselves.
Christianity says this problem is everywhere. It is not claiming one group of people is uniquely bad:
…for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God.
Romans 3:23
The prophet Isaiah described it with a picture from ordinary life:
All we like sheep have gone astray. Everyone has turned to his own way; and Yahweh has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Isaiah 53:6

Why it matters
If sin were only a list of rules, the answer would be to try harder. The Christian message is different. It does not ask you to fix yourself before God will accept you. It offers forgiveness, and a new start in a restored relationship with him.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9
Many people find this word hard because it has been used to shame them. If that is your experience, you are welcome to talk about it with someone who will listen.
